Octave Chanute to Wilbur Wright

Chicago, January 28, 1906

You enthused so very little over the subject of my writing for The Car that I made up my mind to refuse Mr. Pedley any information as well as the photo. I was puzzling in what polite terms I might do so when the Aeronautical Journal came in. The "remarkable" way in which Orville's letter was received (Alexander & Capper being present) has changed my mind1 and I will write to Pedley so as to confirm the truth of your statements in a few days.

Now, here is more fun. I enclose a letter from the Austrian Aeronautical Society in which able and distinguished gentlemen, in a fever of curiosity, offer to trade off "diplomas" for a "schematical sketch" and description of your machine. They really deserve that I should send them the "schematicals" for the "No-Name" series, which by the way I never meant for you to return, but I will write instead a very respectful and modest letter, declining the proffered honor as being quite unworthy of it.

Have you been advised of the honor intended for you and have you anything to suggest?

I am both amused and annoyed with the incident, as the men are really prominent in Vienna, and believe in you.

I have only two clippings this week, and send them.
